چکیده
In September 2021, the La Fossa crater at Vulcano, in Italy, entered a new phase of unrest. We discuss set monitoring parameters included INGV surveillance network, which closely tracked sequence effects related to crisis. The low-frequency local seismicity sharply increased, while GPS and tiltmeter networks recorded inflation cone, as an effect fluid expansion hydrothermal system. Gravity variations were probably fast processes within shallow sources. anomalies soil CO2 flux, fumarole temperature, plume SO2 flux marked strong increase vapor output from fumaroles. signs impending crisis had been evident chemical isotopic composition gases since July 2021. These geochemical clearly indicative enhanced input magmatic source. October, massive degassing also influenced areas base cone. some areas, thermal aquifer anomalies. By early November, reached its acme. Afterward, monitored started slow discontinuous decreasing trend although remaining, them, sensibly above background for several months. multidisciplinary approach proved decisive interpretation underlying acting different phases unrest, thus allowing consistent evaluation multiple hazards.

Massive submarine gas output during the volcanic unrest off Panarea Island (Aeolian arc, Italy): Inferences for explosive conditions
The possibility of understanding natural processes leading to explosive events in volcanic systems provides advantages for a better management of possible volcanic crises. On account of the possibility of the occurrence of other phenomena, such as tsunamis, the explosions driven by submarine volcanic systems are of particular interest, although little investigated. The recent sudden increase in...
متن کاملRemote Sensing and Geodetic Measurements for Volcanic Slope Monitoring: Surface Variations Measured at Northern Flank of La Fossa Cone (Vulcano Island, Italy)
Results of recent monitoring activities on potentially unstable areas of the NW volcano flank of La Fossa cone (Vulcano Island, Italy) are shown here. They are obtained by integration of data by aerial photogrammetry, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and GPS taken in the 1996–2011 time span. A comparison between multi-temporal models built from remote sensing data (photogrammetry and TLS) highl...
متن کاملGeochemical survey of Levante Bay, Vulcano Island (Italy), a natural laboratory for the study of ocean acidification.
Shallow submarine gas vents in Levante Bay, Vulcano Island (Italy), emit around 3.6t CO2 per day providing a natural laboratory for the study of biogeochemical processes related to seabed CO2 leaks and ocean acidification. The main physico-chemical parameters (T, pH and Eh) were measured at more than 70 stations with 40 seawater samples were collected for chemical analyses. The main gas vent ar...
متن کاملHazard assessment during caldera unrest at the Campi Flegrei, Italy: a contribution from gravity–height gradients
Hazard assessment and risk mitigation at restless calderas is only possible with adequate geophysical monitoring. We show here how detailed long-term microgravity and deformation surveys may contribute to hazard assessment at the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc) in Italy by evaluating gravity–height change (∆g/∆h) gradients obtained during ground inflation and deflation between 1981 and 2001. Such g...
متن کاملContinuous in situ measurements of volcanic gases with a diode-laser-based spectrometer: CO2 and H2O concentration and soil degassing at Vulcano (Aeolian islands: Italy)
We report on a continuous-measurement campaign carried out in Vulcano (Aeolian islands, Sicily), devoted to the simultaneous monitoring of CO2 and H2O concentrations. The measurements were performed with an absorption spectrometer based on a semiconductor laser source emitting around a 2-microm wavelength. The emitted radiation was selectively absorbed by two molecular ro-vibrational transition...
